TRANSFORMING THE SAN PANCRÀS HOSTEL INTO A CIVIC CENTER AS A STRATEGY FOR THE SOCIAL AND TERRITORIAL RECONNECTION AND REVITALIZATION OF BELLATERRA
My Master's Thesis proposes restoring Bellaterra's lost centrality by transforming the San Pancraç Hostel into a new civic centre and creating a public space capable of overcoming the railway barrier and reconnecting the two halves of the town.
The proposal operates simultaneously at the urban, architectural, and constructive scales. At the urban scale, the new public space extends Plaça del Pi beneath the railway tracks, transforming a place of transit into a place of encounter for Bellaterra's three main social groups. At the architectural scale, the building ceases to function as a barrier and instead becomes a connection between different levels, with open, flexible spaces capable of adapting to future needs. Finally, at the constructive scale, a new independent structural system based on structural boxes frees the interior from structural constraints, reinforces the existing building through additional bracing, and concentrates all building services within a single integrated system, simultaneously solving the project's main structural, functional, and technical challenges.
In this way, the intervention goes beyond the rehabilitation of a historic building, transforming it into the element that reconnects Bellaterra through public space while recovering its role as a place for community, interaction, and collective life.
