XIU XIU NURSERY
PRIVATE FACILITY
The project consists of a nursery school in El Vendrell, developed on a plot originally intended for a single-family house, with low buildability, limited site coverage, and restricted height. Regulatory requirements for minimum classroom sizes create a conflict between the required program and the available buildable capacity.
The main strategy is to partially bury the building so that part of the floor area does not count towards urban regulations, thus freeing up space for the program.
Circulation is moved to the exterior, optimizing the usable area.
The design is organized around a central courtyard, reinforcing the concept of a “garden nursery,” where outdoor space becomes the main organizing element. Two rings surround this courtyard: one for horizontal circulation and another for vertical accessibility through a continuous ramp, integrating the semi-basement into the non-computable strategy.
Classrooms are arranged along the perimeter to ensure natural light and ventilation, while service spaces—such as storage, offices, kitchen, and dining area—are located in the semi-buried level, with indirect ventilation through the circulation ring. The section is key to the project: the semi-basement is conceived as an extension of the ground, while the upper floor is designed as a light and transparent pavilion, enhancing natural light and ventilation throughout the building.
